The peninsula Samaná
For drop-outs, individual-travelling and Whale-Watcher
Samaná
probably plays the most important "role of the outsider" for the
dominicain tourism. Primarily it pulls individual tourists here.
Samaná lies in the north-east of the land. Earlier the peninsula
was completely cut off by the remaining land. Meanwhile a street
leads in the principal place Santa Bárbara de Samaná and a
street built anew (one of the best ones of the land!) about a
ridge on the other side to the holiday centres Las Terrenas and
El Portillo. Samaná has primarily white, fine-sandy beaches
which are covered with palms and grass.
Samaná
is a good diving district. In Las Terrenas some diving
schools have settled. Martin and Petra Tolksdorf have taken over
the oldest from them and offer very well organised and in this
subject competent courses and tours. A specific feature is a
cave diving.
Every
year between January and March thousands of hump whales come to
the bay of Samaná to pair off there or to bring her babys
to the world. In this time vacationers can take part in a Whale
Watching tour. Advocates see Whale-Watching as an alternative to
the whaling. Whale catchers would not give up her work without
economic alternative, they say.
